An Ohio keyword research table sorted by search intent with medical marijuana search terms

This guide started in my own analytics. I was checking which keywords this blog actually hits for, and one of them was top SEO search terms in Ohio medical marijuana. People in Ohio were landing on my guide to how to find SEO terms for cannabis while searching for medical marijuana help. They deserved their own guide, so I pulled one for them.

Ohio borders Michigan, and recreational use just became legal there within the last two years. That shift changes how medical operators compete, and the ones I talk to are looking for more organic traffic to make up ground.

What surprised me most looking at this set is how easy most of these keywords are. Low keyword difficulty runs across a huge share of the list, which means ranking highly is realistic for a dispensary that does the work. The registry term alone has 5,400 monthly searches at an Ahrefs keyword difficulty score of 4.

This keyword set is from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer. It is US data from the matching terms report, filtered to a minimum of 150 monthly searches. The two seed phrases were “ohio medical marijuana” and “ohio dispensary.” Volumes are estimated monthly searches, KD is Ahrefs’ competition estimate, and traffic potential is Ahrefs’ estimate for the traffic a page could earn. These figures help you prioritize. Actual rankings and visits depend on your site, competition, and execution.

What this pull does not include

This is a filtered pull from two seed phrases, so it helps to be plain about what is missing before you plan anything around it.

  • Michigan border terms are excluded, including “michigan dispensary near ohio” and “closest michigan dispensary to ohio.” This set is Ohio focus only.
  • Three Ohio card variants had no difficulty or traffic potential data available, so they are not in the tables. Those are “cheapest medical marijuanas card ohio online,” “ohio medical marijuanas card registry,” and “ohio medical marijuanas card online cost.”
  • Anything under 150 monthly searches is absent, so the long tail does not appear here.
  • Recreational and product terms outside the two seeds are not covered, including “weed near me ohio,” “thc gummies ohio,” “ohio weed laws,” and delivery, deals, or menu modifiers.
  • Question keywords and related terms reports were not run, and SERP feature data was not pulled.
  • CPC is mostly null across this set because cannabis is restricted from Google Ads. Do not draw commercial value conclusions from the CPC column.

Treat this list as one filtered pull, and treat it as a starting point for your Ohio keyword research.

I grouped the remaining terms by search intent so you can see where your dispensary can build visibility. The groups cover statewide terms, local store searches, brand demand, and patient card research.

Statewide searches put your dispensary on the map

Broad Ohio terms can bring visibility across the state. Their difficulty varies, so use these to shape your site architecture and assess the competition. A statewide term may suit a directory or resource page better than a single-location landing page.

Keyword Volume KD Traffic potential Group Intent
“ohio dispensary” 3,100 48 6,300 dispensary statewide Commercial, local
“dispensary ohio” 1,100 65 8,300 dispensary statewide Commercial, local
“ohio dispensary map” 1,200 15 9,200 dispensary statewide Commercial, local
“ohio recreational dispensary” 1,200 19 1,300 dispensary statewide Commercial, local
“ohio medical marijuana” 1,500 0 0 head term Informational, local
“medical marijuana ohio” 600 21 5,000 head term Informational, local
“ohio medical cannabis” 150 31 4,800 head term Informational, local

The volume and traffic potential columns tell different stories. For example, “ohio dispensary map” has 1,200 searches and a 9,200 traffic potential estimate. Treat that as a cue to inspect the ranking results and competing pages, then build a genuinely useful location resource.

Local searches reveal city-level opportunities

City terms can connect nearby shoppers with the right store page. Several in this list have KD scores from 0 to 5, including Dayton, Springfield, Piqua, Jackson, and Middletown.

Middletown stands out. “dispensary middletown ohio” has a traffic potential estimate of 9,800. The provided keyword set contains no Cleveland term, so Cleveland operators should run a separate city and neighborhood query review before planning pages.

Keyword Volume KD Traffic potential Group Intent
“dispensary columbus ohio” 4,900 24 5,500 dispensary city Commercial, local
“columbus ohio dispensary” 1,000 33 6,000 dispensary city Commercial, local
“weed dispensary columbus ohio” 800 35 5,700 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dispensary cincinnati ohio” 2,700 37 8,700 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dispensary dayton ohio” 3,300 2 450 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dayton ohio dispensary” 500 50 2,000 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dispensary akron ohio” 1,100 24 3,300 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dispensary canton ohio” 1,100 18 6,300 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dispensary middletown ohio” 800 0 9,800 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dispensary springfield ohio” 900 1 7,900 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dispensary piqua ohio” 900 0 4,700 dispensary city Commercial, local
“dispensary jackson ohio” 800 0 7,900 dispensary city Commercial, local

KD is a relative competition estimate and never a ranking promise. A low score makes a keyword worth examining, then your page still needs accurate location details, crawlable content, strong internal links, and a useful path to the menu or store visit. The low scores surprised me more than anything else in this pull, and they are the reason this guide exists instead of a shrug.

This is also the window. Recreational sales just arrived in Ohio within the last two years, the medical side is adjusting while more operators pour in, and difficulty scores that look easy today will not stay that way once everyone notices. Getting visible while the terms are still cheap beats fighting for them later.

Brand searches show where competitors have demand

Searches for Ayr, Sunnyside, Greenlight, and local dispensary names show that people already look for specific operators and locations. That branded demand can help you spot which competitors have mindshare in nearby markets.

Your own location pages and Google Business Profiles should clearly connect your brand to each store, service area, hours, and menu. Competitor brand terms can inform your research, while your pages should focus on your own accurate business information.

Keyword Volume KD Traffic potential Group Intent
“ayr dispensary ohio” 1,700 8 7,500 dispensary brand Commercial, branded, local
“ayr dispensary goshen ohio” 800 7 7,600 dispensary brand Commercial, branded, local

“greenlight dispensary marietta ohio” 3,300 5 900 dispensary brand Commercial, branded, local

Card and registry searches can introduce future customers

People searching for a medical marijuana card or registry information may be researching the program before choosing a dispensary. Useful and clearly sourced education can help your business earn visibility earlier in that journey. Keep legal and eligibility details current, and point readers to official resources for decisions about their status.

What these terms mean for your dispensary

Start with the pages your customers need. Each location should have a distinct, useful page with its address, hours, directions, service details, and links to the menu. A city name swapped into a duplicate template gives searchers little to use.

Your menu and menu pages matter, too. Make key categories and store information accessible to search engines, and give shoppers clear paths from location pages to relevant products. If the menu lives in an integration, check what Google can actually crawl and index there.

Your Google Business Profile should match the site with accurate name, address, phone, hours, and location-specific details. Those basics help searchers and search systems connect your business to the places you serve.

Think about AI visibility alongside regular rankings. When someone asks ChatGPT for the best dispensary in Columbus, the answer depends on what the system can understand and cite. Clear business details, useful location pages, accurate menu information, and relevant third-party references give answer engines better source material to work with. No one can promise a specific citation, so track mentions and improve the pages that support them.

I have worked in cannabis SEO since 2020, including hands-on keyword research, content planning, writing, imagery, and publishing. I have seen educational pages bring in meaningful organic visibility when the content answers real search questions and connects readers to relevant store pages.

Turn this list into an action plan

  1. Build or improve a unique page for each location and its actual service area.
  2. Optimize each Google Business Profile with accurate, complete store information.
  3. Check that your menu pages and important categories are crawlable and linked from relevant pages.
  4. Create education content around card, renewal, and law-related searches, using current and reliable sources.
  5. Link educational pages to appropriate location and menu pages.
  6. Track rankings, organic visits, calls, and store actions, then revisit the plan as search behavior changes.
